Troy, NY -- Rensselaer County District Attorney Mary Pat Donnelly announced that Mathius Ortiz, 31, of Troy, was sentenced today after his plea to one count of Placing a False Bomb or Hazardous Substance- 1st Degree, a class E Felony.
On April 19, 2024, at the intersection of Jefferson and Hill Street in the City of Troy, as group of school children exited a school bus, defendant stated to them that he had a bomb. Ortiz then threw a metallic cylinder device, exhibiting numbers and clock timer, and told the children they should run. The group of children ran to a nearby residence where police were called.
Ortiz was sentenced to serve 1.5 - 3 years in state prison. Assistant District Attorney George Sexton prosecuted the case.
