Troy, NY -- Rensselaer County District Attorney Mary Pat Donnelly announced today that Michael Cardwell, 39, of Troy, pled guilty to one count of sexual abuse in the 1st Degree. Cardwell also pled guilty in the Northern District of New York to sexual exploitation of a child and possession of child sexual abuse materials after a federal probe was initiated.
The District Attorney’s office became aware of a potential multijurisdictional crime and while seeking a guilty plea, conferred with the United States Attorney’s office. Their investigation determined Cardwell was in possession of photos of prepubescent children engaged in sexual activity.
“We believe there may be other child victims,” said District Attorney Mary Pat Donnelly. “If anyone feels they are a victim or know of a victim of Michael Cardwell, we are asking them to please reach out to their local law enforcement office.”
Cardwell is due back in Rensselaer County court to be sentenced on May 27th. He is expected to be sentenced to a maximum of 7 years; to run concurrently with the federal sentencing, where he may receive up to 50 years imprisonment.
Assistant District Attorney Antonia Lane prosecuted Cardwell in Rensselaer County Court.
