Troy, NY –Rensselaer County District Attorney Mary Pat Donnelly announced that a sealed indictment was
handed up for Vera Crumble, age 35, of Troy, NY. Crumble was arraigned this morning on one count of
Murder in the Second Degree, Penal Law 125.25 subdivision 3 and Arson in the Second Degree, in violation of
Section 150.15 of the Penal Law, in the death of 64 year-old Thomas Bessette, of Troy.

Crumble is accused of starting the fire at 177 3rd Street, Troy, that killed Bessette on July 17, 2020. “Bessette
suffered injuries from the fire set by Crumble, received treatment and succumbed to his injuries seven days
later,” stated Chief ADA Matt Hauf.

Chief Assistant District Attorney Matthew Hauf presented the case to the grand jury.

“We are thankful for the cooperation of the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control as they
investigated this structure fire that unfortunately resulted in the death of Mr. Bessette,” said Mary Pat Donnelly,
Rensselaer County District Attorney.

Crumble was arraigned today by the Hon. Debra Young.
