Reckless Driving Incident in Pittstown

Reckless Driving Incident in Pittstown Shows Stunning Series of Public Safety Failures, Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin Says

The shocking reckless driving incident that jeopardized a young student exiting a school bus in Pittstown shows a number of public safety failures that need to be addressed immediately, Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin.

“This incident shows a number of stunning failures in public policy that are jeopardizing public safety across our state and country,” said McLaughlin.

“Residents should know that failed policies allowed an illegal migrant into our country and county and able to jeopardize the life of a young girl and the lives of other motorists. Residents should also know that failed policies ensured the illegal migrant is now back on the streets just hours after nearly taking a life,” he added.

On Tuesday, a 12-year-old girl leaving a school bus on State Route 7 was nearly struck by a speeding van that came just feet away from the bus while traveling on the shoulder of the road. The quick action of a school bus driver who pulled the girl back from the exit saved her from injury or worse.

The van was driven by an illegal migrant in the country from Ecuador. Another passenger in the van was also an illegal migrant from Ecuador. The driver had no valid driver’s license and there was no valid insurance for the van.

Despite being charged with reckless endangerment and reckless driving, and in the country illegally, the illegal migrant was released from custody mere hours after the incident.

“It is disturbing that an illegal migrant could be arrested on such serious charges for jeopardizing the life of a young girl, and because of state laws like bail reform, be back out on the street in just hours,” said McLaughlin.

“What is equally bad is that the Governor has failed to even acknowledge this incident occurred, just as she was silent last spring when a county resident was killed by an illegal migrant. Her silence is shocking and shows a disregard for the safety of residents,” added McLaughlin.

“This is just the latest incident where an illegal migrant has threatened the life of a county resident. If the state does not take action, it will unfortunately not be the last,” he concluded.
