Small Appliances / Electronics

  • Unplug from wall outlet when not in use
  • Use a power strip for electronic devices
  • Turn off monitor if not using computer

Refrigerator / Freezer

  • Set Refrigerator temperature between 38° to 42°F
  • Set Freezer temperature between 0° to 5°F
  • Keep them full
  • Make sure air circulates

Range / Microwave

  • Use microwave for most cooking
  • Match pan size to heating element size
  • Use flat bottom cookware

  • Use air-dry cycle on lightweight loads

  • Turn off lights as you leave a room

  • Install energy efficient faucets
  • Set water heater temperature to 120°F
  • Repair leaks/replace worn out washers
  • Insulate water pipes
  • Turn off water heater if you go away
  • Take showers instead of baths
  • Turn off faucet while washing dishes, brushing teeth, shaving

Windows & Doors

  • Weather strip around doors and windows
  • Caulk small gaps
  • Use foam insulation for large cracks in walls, floors or foundations
  • Double insulate windows with storm windows or plastic sheeting
  • Close drapes to keep warm air in; open to allow sun to warm a room

Keeping Warm / Staying Cool

  • Set thermostat for Heat: 65° to 68°F
  • Set thermostat for Air-conditioning: 78°F
  • Clean/replace filters monthly
  • Keep vents unobstructed
  • Plant shade trees that lose leaves in winter
  • Keep chimney damper closed when fireplace not in use
  • Add a sweater, blanket in winter
  • Wear lightweight clothes in summer
