Assistance for Parents:

As a parent, you should always know and feel comfortable with any person who has unsupervised access to your child.  Please, never assume that because someone you know is not on a list of known sex offenders that there is nothing to worry about.  The question of how best to talk to children about sensitive safety issues, such as the presence of sex offenders in your neighborhood, may be a difficult one for many to answer.  In Rensselaer County, we are fortunate to have the START Children’s Center.  The professionals at the START Center specialize in working with children and their families concerned about and/or affected by sexual and physical abuse.  They are available to provide information and assist parents in determining the best way to speak with your children to insure they never become victims of abuse.
