A checklist to help

Reduce Your Energy Bill$

LOCATE AIR LEAKS AT OR AROUND:

• Electrical outlets
• Switch plates
• Window frames
• Baseboards
• Door weather stripping
• Fireplace dampers
• Attic hatches
• Air conditioners in walls/windows
• Pipes and wires
• Foundation seals
• Mail slots
• Also check caulking/weather stripping for gaps / cracks / aging

INSULATION IN/ON:

• Attic over living areas ceilings
• Knee walls in attics
• Basement under living area floors
• Foundation walls in basements
• Crawl spaces (& seal air leaks/prevent moisture)
• Walls (check for inadequate or settled insulation)
• Attic hatch
• Floors in rooms over an unheated garage
• Also check for a vapor barrier behind attic insulation to prevent insulation-robbing moisture and consider replacing old doors and windows with newer, high-performance ones.

HEATING/COOLING EQUIPMENT:

• Insulate furnace ducts
• Programmable thermostats
• Insulate water heater and hot water pipes
• Install heat traps on a water heater tank
• Also consider replacing older central heating, air conditioning and water heating units with newer, energy-efficient models

LIGHTING:

• Use compact fluorescent bulbs
• Replace halogen bulbs with other types
• Use smaller wattage bulbs where possible
• Also consider replacing ceiling fixtures with new technology, fluorescent models.
