The food service sanitation program issues permits and inspects all food service facilities.

Lead Hazard Abatement:
The Environmental Division staff conduct home inspection and assessment services for children with elevated blood levels. This is a referral based program coordinated by the Nursing Division. Nursing Division Family Health Page
Public Health Nuisances:
Investigation of public health nuisances including:
- Vermin
- Sewage overflows
- Mosquito breeding sites
Tattoo and Body Piercing:
Any business that provides tattooing or body piercing services in Rensselaer County must first obtain a Permit to Operate from the health department. Environmental Health Division staff conduct inspections to minimize the risk of bloodborne diseases.

Rensselaer County Department of Health inspects and issues permits for the following:
- Campgrounds
- Hotels and Motels
- Migrant Labor Camps
- Fairs and Festivals

Swimming Pools and Bathing Beaches:
The purpose of this program is to assure a sanitary, healthful and safe environment when using public swimming pools and bathing beaches. Water recreation facilities are required to submit monthly operation reports, safety plans, emergency plans and lifeguard certification information, all of which are reviewed by the Environmental Health Division for compliance with the New York State Sanitary Code. Facilities require a permit to operate, renewed annually.

Individual Water Supplies :
County residents may receive assistance upon request regarding a variety of well water issues.

Public Health Engineering:
° Individual Wastewater Treatment
To prevent human health hazards and prevent surface and ground water contamination, the Environmental Division Staff is responsible for:

Plans for subdivisions are submitted to the Environmental Health Division by New York State licensed professionals (usually professional engineers) for review in an ongoing effort to ensure safe drinking water and safe wastewater disposal for the proposed communities.

Healthy Neighborhood Programs:
The focus of this program is to conduct community surveys for the purpose of identifying public health issues in the home, and providing guidance accordingly. Specific goals of this program are to:
- Prevent childhood lead poisoning
- Improve the health and quality of life of people with asthma
- Improve indoor air quality and reduce related illnesses
- Reduce the number of residential fires, related injuries and fire deaths
- Reduce the impact of tobacco use
