Disease Control - Needle Exchange Sharps Smarts New York State requires hospitals and nursing homes to accept sharps* from the community and dispose of them. Many people use sharps as part of their home medical care. Proper disposal of sharps is important to the safety of the sharps user and to workers who handle trash. Follow the guidelines to keep yourself and others safe. *needles, syringes and lancets only At home use a container that is leakproof, shatterproof and puncture proof with a screw top. Good choices are durable plastic bleach or detergent bottles. Bad choices are glass, aluminum, or cardboard containers. Place lancet or needle and syringe in the container IMMEDIATELY after using. DO NOT recap needles, bend needles or break lancets. Screw the screw top on the container and label the container "SHARPS." When the home container is full, make sure the top is screwed on securely, then apply tape around the top and the neck of the container. Locate the hospital or nursing home closest to you that participates in the disposal program and dispose of sharps. NEVER PUT SHARPS CONTAINERS IN A RECYCLING BIN!
